Charts 1912, 142 6388 Between Punta de los Judios and the root of the breakwater at Tangier, 1½ miles E, the coast is bordered by a bank which extends up to 4½ cables offshore. Fishing nets. Tunny nets (see 1-4 and 8.1) may be found extending about 1 mile offshore for 2 miles off Punta de los Judios. TANGIER BAY Chart 1912 Coastal features 636 Tangier Bay, which is backed by high land, is centered between a breakwater which projects from the coast 2½ miles ESE of Punta de los Judios, and Punta Malabata (35° 49’N, 5° 45’W) 2 miles NE. See view 51. The greater part of the shore of the bay consists of a sandy beach, but NE of Club Gandori, situated 16 cables E of the head of the breakwater, it is fringed in places by reefs and foul ground extending up to 1½ cables offshore. The city of Tangier lies behind the W side of the bay. Punta Malabata is a bold and prominent headland terminating in steep cliffs on the summit of which are the lighthouse described below and a disused battery. The land within the point rises to a height of 272 m and the point is fringed by rocks to a distance of 1½ cables. Punta Malabata Lighthouse Punta Malabata Light is exhibited from a white square tower on a dwelling, 18 m in height. El Charf or Monte Dirección (35° 46’N, 5° 47’W), an isolated conical hill, 100 m (327 ft) high, having a white house with a minaret on its summit, lies 1½ miles S of the head of the breakwater. Old Tangier Village Tower, a conspicuous and useful mark for entering the bay, stands on a slightly lower hill 1 mile NE. A mosque which stands 1½ miles WSW of the head of the breakwater and a white water tower which stands 7 cables W of it are both conspicuous. El Charf Lighthouse A light is exhibited from the terrace of a white house, 6 m in height, on El Charf and obstruction lights are exhibited from a radio mast 11 cables SW of it. In 1980 the lighthouse was surrounded by trees and difficult to see by day. A sardine cannery with an iron chimney stands 9 cables S of the breakwater head; a similar chimney stands 1½ cables SE. Two white towers with a gateway between them stand at each end of the garden wall of Villa Harris, 1½ miles E of the sardine cannery; the W tower is conspicuous. Club Gandori stands at the NE end of the sandy beach, and Fort Burj or Achmet, in ruins, 1 mile farther NE. A ruined tower, close E of which is a conspicuous white prison, stands 1 cable SE of Club Gandori (35° 47’N, 5° 46’W). Offshore dangers 6.860 Piedra Bourée, which has a least depth of 0.9 m (3 ft) over it, lies 9½ cables E of the head of the breakwater and near the end of a spit which extends 6½ cables NNW from the head of the bay. It is marked on its NW side by a light-buoy (N cardinal). A dangerous wreck, marked on its E side by a light-buoy, lies 5 cables ENE of the head of the breakwater. Gandori Shoal with a least depth of 5.7 m (18 ft) lies 5 cables NW of Club Gandori. Seuil du Burj, a rocky shoal with a least depth of 3.6 m (12 ft) over it, lies 5 cables N of Fort Burj. There are a number of rocks between the shoal and the fort. Piedra del Almirante, with a depth of 6.3 m (20 ft), lies 5½ cables N of Punta Malabata (35° 49’N, 5° 45’W). There is generally a swell over this rock and heavy seas break over it. Deep-draught ships should not attempt to pass inside this shoal. Punta Malabata should be given a berth of at least 1 mile. The above shoals are covered by the red sector of El Charf Light. A light-buoy (N cardinal) is moored 6½ cables NW of Piedra del Almirante. Anchorages 6387 Tangier Bay is the only anchorage of any importance on the S shore of the Strait of Gibraltar which can be used by large vessels, and although exposed to N and NE winds, it affords security with those from other directions. Vessels of deep draught can obtain anchorage in depths of from 10 to 14 m within an area indicated on the chart SE of the breakwater head. The best berth outside the harbour during winds from the southern quadrants is in depths of from 11 m to 14 m, sand, good holding ground, with El Charf bearing about 180° and Kasbah Tower bearing about 270°. During a severe Levante the best berth is in depths of from 12 m to 16 m, sand, W of a small beach with some ruins at its N end 5 cables S of Punta Malabata (35° 49’N, 5° 45’W) and with the lighthouse on that point bearing 034°, but the nature of the bottom should be ascertained before anchoring as it is rocky in places. 688 Prohibited anchorage. In order to facilitate the movements of ships berthing at or leaving the quays on the side of the breakwater, anchorage is prohibited in an area, indicated on the chart, S of the breakwater. Anchorage is prohibited W of a line indicated on the chart, running N from the head of the bay 5 cables W of the head of the breakwater, which marks the W limit of a cable area
